About

Dr. JD Foster completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin and obtained a master’s degree in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Kansas. After several years in academia, he now runs the Nephrology & Urology and Extracorporeal Therapies services at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, DC. Dr. Foster’s research interests include nontraditional uses of extracorporeal blood purification, glomerulonephritis, and drug pharmacokinetics in patients with kidney disease. He is a past-president of the American Society of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology, a current board member of the International Renal Interest Society, and the nephrology chair and founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology.

The evaluation of polyuria and polydipsia (pu/pd) can be expensive and frustrating. There are numerous causes that may not show up on routine lab work. This lecture will review the common causes of pu/pd, create an algorithm for diagnostic tests, and review water deprivation testing. Attendees will leave feeling more prepared with a logical plan on how to approach such frustrating cases.

Best Practices for Treating Feline Urethral Obstruction

Urethral obstruction (UO) is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate intervention. The method of catheterization and other supportive factors may affect the success of un-obstruction as well as the risk of recurrence. This lecture will review the techniques to maximize clinical success—from catheter size selection to the use of prazosin—all aspects of UO management will be discussed.

High SDMA—What Do I Do Now?

Many routine chemistry panels include the measurement of symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA). This lecture reviews the significance of SDMA and its role in the evaluation of kidney health. We will discuss action steps to take when SDMA is elevated, particularly when the rest of the chemistry panel is perfectly normal.

The Role of Extracorporeal Therapies in Acute Toxicities

There is a limited window of time after exposure to a toxin during which the toxin can actually be extracted from blood. Such treatments involve dialysis machines and other equipment, which are becoming more available throughout the United States. This lecture discusses how toxins can be removed and when patients should be referred for extracorporeal therapies. Such intervention often prevents patient illness even when lethal quantities of a toxin may have been ingested.

Strategies for Slowing the Progression of Chronic Kidney Disease

CKD will progress over time, but our interventions may help slow this process. Evidence for renal therapeutics will be discussed and a strategy to sustain global kidney health will be presented. By slowing the progression of disease, we can maintain a better quality of life for our patients.
