The Top 5 Common Emergencies and What to Do (Part 1)
Veterinary technicians must be ready for any emergency that may present as well as be ready for any disease process to quickly become an emergency. This session will cover the most common emergencies including patient triage both in the lobby and while hospitalized, stabilizing strategies including shock physiology and recognition, treatment including fluid therapy and pain management, and continued monitoring. An emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, anticipating change, and the importance of nursing plans. Part 1 will cover gastrointestinal emergencies and respiratory emergencies.

This session is a continuation of the previous session. Veterinary technicians must be ready for any emergency that may present as well as be ready for any disease process to quickly become an emergency. This session will cover the most common emergencies including patient triage both in the lobby and while hospitalized, stabilizing strategies including shock physiology and recognition, treatment including fluid therapy and pain management, and continued monitoring. An emphasis will be placed on critical thinking, anticipating change, and the importance of nursing plans. Part 2 will cover trauma, urinary obstruction in cats, and toxicologic emergencies.

Understanding Fluid Therapy
Not all IV fluids are created equal, and not every type of fluid is appropriate for every patient. This lecture will explain not only the make-up of fluids but when to use each type, where fluids go once they enter the body, how to calculate IV fluids and drug additives, and how to monitor patients on fluid therapy. The lecture will conclude with case studies and audience participation to determine patient fluid needs.

Get Your Blood Pumping About Blood Pressure
A patient’s blood pressure gives the nursing team valuable information about patient perfusion, fluid balance, and disease status. Are you confident in your understanding of blood pressure readings?
