About

Suzie Kovacs received a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Claremont Graduate University for work focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the veterinary profession. Suzie took a faculty position at WesternU’s College of Veterinary Medicine when the college’s charter class was in the second year of its program, teaching epidemiology. Suzie was a charter recipient of the Broad Spectrum Veterinary Student Association LGBT+ Awareness Award, which recognizes those who support and confirm inclusivity in veterinary academia, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Suzie recently became the Associate Dean for Student Success at Rowan University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, the first veterinary school in New Jersey.

Diversity Trends in the Veterinary Profession: Taking the Pulse

This session will take a look at the stark lack of diversity and inclusion in the veterinary profession from past to present. Quantitative and qualitative data will bring attention to the efforts that are necessary to create a veterinary profession that works for everyone. Strategies and resources for veterinary professionals will be shared. This session will be of significant value for those new to discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and the veterinary profession.

This session will explore current tensions facing this nation’s veterinary profession—access to care, mental health and well-being of the veterinary workforce, and student debt—through a DEI lens that will demonstrate how integral creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive profession is to the health and overall survival of the profession.
