One Health in Vector-Borne Diseases: More Than a Slogan

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) in California clearly illustrate the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and ecosystems—capturing the essence of the One Health model. This presentation outlines how veterinarians can actively contribute to public health through environmental awareness, early detection, and cross-sector communication. This presentation highlights the work done and information available from the California Department of Public Health vector-borne disease section, which can enhance your practical knowledge and response to vector-borne disease for both your patients and clients.

2:40 PM–3:40 PM

One Health, One World: The Changing Epidemiology of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in California

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) remains a rare but potentially fatal disease of humans and animals. Changing vector ecology (multiple tick species involved in different ecologic cycles) and cross-border travel necessitate swift clinical recognition, early doxycycline, and integrated public health/veterinary actions. This presentation will review the intersection of humans and dogs in RMSF epidemiology in California using a One Health perspective to underscore how awareness and understanding of the disease improves health in both humans and animals.
