Dr. John Rush concurrently completed his veterinary degree and a Master’s degree at The Ohio State University in 1984. He has been a faculty member at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University for over 30 years. He is a diplomate of both American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Cardiology) and American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC). Dr. Rush’s honors include the Tufts’ President Award, the Cummings School Faculty Hall of Fame, the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence, the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award, and the ACVECC Jack Mara Scientific Achievement Award.

Diagnosis and Management of Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease

Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD), also known as Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease, is the most common form of heart disease and heart failure in the dog. Recent advances in diagnosis and management have been developed to include management of dogs before the onset of heart failure. Proper management of dogs with MMVD can prolong both the asymptomatic phase and the survival time after the onset of heart failure.

Management of Congestive Heart Failure in the Dog

Congestive heart failure (CHF) can be tricky to diagnose and to successfully manage. Treatment options and management strategies will be reviewed for both the initial onset of CHF (Stage C) and advanced CHF (Stage D).

Diagnosis and Management of Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the second most common form of heart disease in the dog and is very common in Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, and large-breed dogs. Diagnosis is usually established via echocardiography, although the early stages of DCM (occult DCM) can be suspected or identified in some breeds via other tests, such as cardiac biomarkers of ambulatory electrocardiography. These diagnostic tests and treatment of DCM will be reviewed.

Pericardial Disease

Pericardial disease is common in dogs and can lead to life-threatening collapse or sudden death. We will review the common clinical presentations and diagnostic tests for pericardial disease, review the physiologic changes behind cardiac tamponade, and outline treatment strategies for the common causes of pericardial effusion.

Diagnosis and Management of Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common form of heart disease in cats. Unfortunately, HCM often goes undetected, until a crisis such as CHF or arterial embolism develops. We will discuss the options for diagnostic testing for HCM and review the management of CHF in cats with HCM.

Feline Cardiomyopathy and Arterial Embolism

Classification of cardiomyopathy can be confusing, and one of the key determinations is whether the treatment approach will vary based on the form of feline cardiomyopathy. Arterial thromboembolism (ATE) is a frustrating disease to treat, but newer management approaches might be able to prevent ATE, especially if heart disease is found early. In this presentation we will review the other forms of cardiomyopathy and talk about management and prevention of ATE in cats.
