The Endocannabinoid System (ECS): The Body’s Local Thermostat
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex system composed of chemical compounds, receptors, and degradation enzymes that are present throughout the nervous system as well as in organs and tissues throughout the body. While the true purpose of the ECS is to maintain homeostasis, it has several intricate mechanisms. The ECS functions to control multiple neurotransmitters in the body and plays a role in reducing inflammation, pain, reproductive health, gut health, and more. This lecture will discuss both the structure and function of the ECS and provide the foundation for understanding why compounds found in cannabis have profound effects on the body. We will also discuss Endocannabinoid Deficiency and how it has been shown to be associated with a variety of chronic diseases.

A Tour of the Cannabis Plant: What’s Inside?
There are over 700 compounds found within the cannabis plant, with over 150 phytocannabinoids, over 200 terpenes, and approximately 29 flavonoids. There are preclinical studies demonstrating that all three groups have a physiologic and therapeutic effect. We will review the proper terminology and classification systems of the cannabis plant as well as discuss in detail the most common phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. This lecture will review the effects of the whole plant on the body, as well as how specific combinations of cannabinoids and terpenes can be used synergistically to treat certain diseases.

Perspectives from a Veterinary Oncologist on the Use of Cannabis in the Cancer Patient
Until recently, most of the cannabinoid application in cancer patients has been focused on palliative uses, such as antiemetic, reduction in pain, and increase in appetite. The discovery of the potential value of these compounds as direct antineoplastic effects has led to more research and advancements in cannabinoid implementation in the cancer patient treatment protocol.
