Pathway Development in Veterinary Medicine: A Collective Responsibility for Diversity
The veterinary profession faces a significant diversity challenge. According to the 2023 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, less than 2% of veterinarians are Black, less than 8% are Latino, and less than 6% are Asian. The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) reports that 70% of the DVM Class of 2024 is white. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this demographic divide, leading to a substantial decrease in enrollment of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) men and low-income students.
This session will explore the critical need for intentional and purposeful initiatives by all stakeholders to improve diversity within the veterinary community. We will discuss strategies to reduce barriers and create opportunities for underrepresented minority students to pursue careers in veterinary medicine. Participants will learn about effective pathway development programs, such as blendVET’s “Believe and Belong in Veterinary Medicine,” and how to implement similar initiatives in their workplaces and organizations.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Analyze current demographic trends in veterinary medicine and their impact on academia, veterinary-client-patient relationships, and professional culture.
- Identify academic and socioeconomic barriers facing underrepresented minority students (URM) at various stages of the veterinary medicine pathway.
- Design and implement effective pathway initiatives to support and retain diverse students in veterinary medicine.
- Develop strategies for creating sustainable diversity programs within veterinary practices, schools, and organizations.
- Recognize the role of mentorship and networking in supporting URM students throughout their veterinary education and career.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of existing diversity programs and adapt them to meet the specific needs of their communities.
