H5N1 and New World Screwworm: What Every Veterinarian Needs to Know

The recent detection of Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 in U.S. dairy cattle and the re-emergence of New World screwworm highlight how quickly pathogens can cross species and geographic boundaries. Animal health threats like these can have implications not only for animal health but also for human and environmental health. This session will provide veterinarians with an up-to-date overview of both conditions. Topics will include clinical presentation, transmission dynamics, and current regulatory and response frameworks. Emphasis will be placed on what frontline veterinarians need to recognize, report, and implement to protect animals, their owners, and the public.

11:25 AM–12:25 PM

Clinic-Based Antibiograms: A Tool for Better Decision-Making and AMR Surveillance

Clinic-specific antibiograms are an underused but powerful tool for improving antimicrobial prescribing practices and supporting clinic-based antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance. This session will introduce the principles behind antibiograms, how they are generated, and how they can be applied in a veterinary practice setting. Participants will learn how these data can support antimicrobial stewardship efforts within the clinic by not only guiding empirical antibiotic therapy but also identifying important emerging resistance trends.

1:55 PM–2:55 PM

One Health in the Exam Room: Integrating Zoonotic Disease, AMR, and Environmental Awareness into Everyday Care

This session will explore how the One Health framework can be applied in everyday veterinary practice to support animal, human, and environmental health. Using practical, exam-ready examples, this session will demonstrate how clinics can incorporate zoonotic disease prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and environmental awareness into routine care decisions and client conversations without adding burden to already busy workflows.

Environmental One Health: Reducing the Environmental Footprint of Veterinary Practice

Environmental contamination secondary to veterinary pharmaceuticals and generated waste is a critical but often overlooked One Health challenge. This session will examine how everyday veterinary practice contributes to environmental contamination and its downstream impact on human, animal, and environmental health.  Participants will learn practical strategies that can be easily implemented in clinic settings and in client conversations to reduce this impact. Topics will include waste segregation, safe disposal practices, sustainable purchasing choices, optimal pharmaceutical prescribing, biosecurity measures, and how incorporating these choices can support One Health goals without compromising patient care or clinic efficiency.
