Me-OUCH! Feline Pain Is Purr-tinent, Too
Cats are becoming increasingly popular as pets in the United States, with more than 70 million pet cats noted in a recent survey of pet owners. Our understanding of feline pain has lagged behind this boom. This lecture reviews the physiology of pain, common feline pain behaviors, types of pain scales, and pain assessment tools for both laypeople and veterinary professionals with an emphasis on the Feline Grimace Scale (FGS). This lecture also focuses on current, evidence-based intervention strategies, including both pharma and non-pharma options.

The Feline-Friendly ER? Right Meow!
This lecture provides an overview of domestic feline behavioral and environmental needs. We will introduces easy and effective steps veterinary technicians can take to decrease stress in their feline ER patients with a focus on handling, housing, nursing care plans, and the physical exam. Emphasis will be placed on feline-friendly interactions. Nutritional needs and environmental modifications will also be discussed.

Fading Fast: Caring for the Critical Kitten
Pediatric and neonatal feline patients appear frequently at both general and ER practices. However, evaluating and treating them can be difficult due to the variations in anatomy, physiology, vital signs, immune, and neurologic function that make them different from adults. This lecture provides an overview of the challenges and successes that can be found in the nursing management of neonatal and pediatric cases, including hypothermia, hypoglycemia, “fading,” neonatal sepsis, and trauma.
