Stephen Jones, MVB, MS, DACVS (Small Animal), DECVS

Dr. Stephen Jones, a native of Ireland, graduated with honors from University College Dublin. He completed internships in Florida, followed by a combined small animal surgery residency and MS at the University of Florida. After serving as an assistant professor of small animal orthopedics at The Ohio State University, Dr. Jones worked in Park City, Utah before joining Omega Veterinary Group in San Mateo, California. Dr. Jones is a diplomate of the ACVS and ECVS, an active researcher, prolific author, and international lecturer with special interests in joint replacement, arthroscopy, minimally invasive fracture repair, and complex orthopedic disease.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is one of the most time-critical emergencies encountered in small animal practice. This lecture reviews the pathophysiology of GDV, rapid recognition in the emergency setting, and evidence-based stabilization and surgical management. Emphasis is placed on decision-making under time pressure, perioperative complications, and strategies to improve survival in this life-threatening condition.
