Anthropogenic Climate Change: The Effects on Health and the Impacts of Providing Care
In this presentation we will review the science of anthropogenic climate change, the causes, and the consequential impacts on planetary health, our health, and our patients’ health. We will discuss how to account for the problem with carbon literacy and the utility of a carbon calculator. The environmental impact of providing veterinary care extends beyond carbon emissions and includes resource extraction, waste disposal, pollution, water use, land use change, and other factors. Veterinarians can become part of the solution to the climate crisis by practicing veterinary medicine sustainably. |

Practicing Sustainable Veterinary Medicine
In this presentation we will review methods we can adopt to facilitate our adaptation to and mitigation of the effects of anthropogenic climate change by practicing veterinary medicine more sustainably. A practical approach will be outlined with actions that can be readily implemented to reduce the environmental and social impacts of healthcare, including the topics of energy, waste, water, transport, procurement, anesthesia, preventative health, diet, and how to form a sustainability/green team. We will also discuss the business case for integrating sustainability into all aspects of veterinary care. |
